I hope you have enjoyed your “snowbreak.” I’m sure there was lots of sledding, snowman building, and snowball throwing. Looks like we have another snow day tomorrow. Here are a few things that you can do to keep your brains working
Hope to see you all soon!
Reading: Read a good book everyday. Be sure to record your book in your reading log. Write a story about your “snow days.” Don’t forget to illustrate your story. Underline the pronouns in your story (I, we, you, they, us, she, he, her, him, and it).
Math: Look for objects shaped like the solid figures we have been studying in class. Can you find something shaped like a pyramid, a cone, a cylinder, a sphere, a cube, or a rectangular prism? Count the flat surfaces, edges, and verticies on your figure. Trace the flat surfaces to see which plane shapes you can make. Ask a family member to make up some 2-digit addition and subtraction problems for you to solve.
Science: What a great week/weekend to study the weather! Write about the types of precipitation you have observed the last few days. Continue working on your water cycle project (Due Tuesday, February 9th).
You can earn a word study homework pass or a trip to the treat box if you bring in one of these practice activities from home when we return.
Have a fun and safe weekend.
Miss Gragnani
To ensure your understanding of the water cycle, it is your job to develop a model demonstrating this process. Be creative, use whatever materials you have at home. Be sure to use the terms precipitation, evaporation, condensation and accumulation. Be sure that you explain what happens in each of the steps. Have fun!!! Due Date: Tuesday, February 9th.
Language Arts/English: This week we be discussing pronouns.
Reading: This week we will be doing Guided Reading. Please have your child read his or her story nightly and practice the vocabulary words. I challenge them to make up questions about their story to ask you.
Word Study:
*Reminder that there is new word study homework. Please check the front of you child’s word study notebook for the assignment each night.
This week your child will receive a new word study sort. In class on Monday, your child will cut the words out and put them in a bag. This bag will remain in the envelope in the back of the word study notebook until Thursday night. We will be using the cut up sort throughout the week so please do not glue the words until Thursday night. Also on Monday, you child will write the sort in his/her notebook correctly. This can be used as a guide for sorting correctly throughout the week. Below is a list of the word study homework assignments. You can also find this glued in the front cover of your child’s word study notebook. Please write the assignment and date at the top of each homework assignment, ex. HW-Written Sort 9/28
Monday- Written Sort
Tuesday- Sort your words and copy them in your notebook. Write the vowels in red and the consonants in blue.
Wednesday- Draw and Label 12 of your word study words

Extra! Extra!
Colonial Store at Goochland Elementary School Will Be Opening This Spring!!!
The Ye Olde Time Store will be opening in the spring of 2010 at Goochland Elementary School!! The students in grades k – 2 will be making the colonial goods to be sold at the store. Last year, 2 classes worked on the goods to sell in the store and were able to donate $900 to the school to purchase library books.
This year each kindergarten – 2nd grade class will be working on different projects to sell in the store. I would like to have a group of parents from each of these classes to help with coordinating the projects for their child’s class. I have colonial project ideas and would like to meet with the interested parents on Wednesday, Jan. 27th at 3:00 in the art room at GES to let you know how you can help. Please sign and return the attached form if you are interested. The Colonial Day at GES this week was our kick-off for beginning this exciting project! Please contact me if you have any questions!
