Students in my classes have been reintroduced to color theory and the color wheel. Let’s get beyond the basics and look at how Van Gogh and Renaissance artists have applied color theory. And then let’s look at how science is interpreting color and light. Enter Pigments Through the Ages web site. The interactive web site below will allow you to explore works of art through pigments, colors, timeline and more.

http://www.webexhibits.org/pigments/intro/visible.html

Students often talk about color excusively as red, yellow, blue, etc. What color is Azurite? Red Ochre? Vermilion? The more students know about color the better they will score when writing SOL English.

My favorite color is madder. I also buy Alizaran Crimson. You’ve heard about Starbucks using Cochineal as their red food coloring in a fav drink. Cochineal is my fav colorant for dyeing fabrics.

Think about how you dress each morning. All black/white with a splash of color? Complimentary? Analogous?  We sense what colors work. I’m trying to teach what colors work and work.
