Algebra II Preview (5/14 – 5/18)

Posted by hjones on May 14, 2012 in Algebra I

For this week–another week of SOL testing–we will go over some Algebra II concepts that you will encounter early in your Algebra II course.  We will look at absolute value equations and inequalities, and see how they can have either two, one, or no solution(s), and when extraneous solutions come into consideration.  We will also continue with our G21 Project, collecting some personal data to make inferences about energy conservation before we move to the last stage where we design an infographic.  Any personal information will remain anonymous.  The homework for this week is:

  • Monday (D1): G21 Project research due by Wednesday
  • Tuesday (D2): G21 Project research due by Wednesday
  • Wednesday (D1): G21 Project Data Collection due by Thursday
  • Thursday (D2): G21 Project Data Collection due by Thursday
  • Friday (D1): G21 Project Infographic Design

  • Monday (D2): study for expedited SOL retake; G21 Project research
  • Tuesday (D1): study for expedited SOL retake; G21 Project research
  • Wednesday (D2): study for expedited SOL retake; G21 Project research

VDOE SOL Practice Items

Posted by hjones on Apr 27, 2012 in SOL Review

“These practice items provide examples of the new content and increased rigor represented by the revised Standards of Learning (SOL) and illustrate the new Technology-Enhanced Item types for the mathematics, reading, science, and writing SOL tests.  Technology-Enhanced Items (TEI) require students to indicate their responses in ways other than a multiple-choice format.

Please note that the practice items are not intended to be a complete test and are not intended to cover all content for the grade level or course.  Furthermore, while the practice items provide examples of some TEI, they are not intended to represent all types of functionality associated with these item types.” (VDOE)

Below is the link to access the VDOE website, where you can work with the SOL Practice Items.  The Guide provides the solutions to the practice items and how to manage the technology tools associated with the TEI items.  Familiarize yourselves and get comfortable with the new format.  If your browser does not work, try another (preferably Safari).

SOL Review Week 1 (4/16 – 4/20)

Posted by hjones on Apr 19, 2012 in Algebra I

For this week, we will begin our first week of review for the SOL.  We will spend a lot of class time working practice problems, reviewing concepts, and practicing on the graphing calculators.  It is during this time, you need to really focus on retaining the material you’ve learned this year and knowing when to apply it.  Retention is the key.  I have taught you everything concerning your standards of learning and pushed you to excel,  and you have demonstrated throughout the year your understanding of the material.  At times you might have struggled with some concepts, but do not let that discourage you.  Many concepts were new and just like riding a bike for the first time, we fall a lot before we manage to balance ourselves and pedal forward, mastering the skill over time with practice.

I have taught you to work problems, not just get an answer.  The process is what we strive to learn and in it, the answer will manifest.  Continue to validate your answers with your work.  I have a lot of faith in you and your potential, and I hope you realize it as well.  Be confident, review thoroughly, and apply test-taking strategies when necessary.

Most work will be in class this week.  Your homework for the week is:

  • Monday (D1): review for SOL
  • Tuesday (D2): review for SOL
  • Wednesday (D1): review for SOL
  • Thursday (D2): review for SOL
  • Friday (D1): review for SOL

The primary homework assignment for this week is accessing the SOL Review using this link: http://blogs.glnd.k12.va.us/teachers/hjones/category/sol-review/.  Follow the directions and complete 40 questions through Jefferson Lab Virginia State Standards of Learning. Make sure you enter your name at the end of the practice test, select “add my name to this report, please!,” and submit the results to my email address: hjones@glnd.k12.va.us.  Also, record what time you submitted the test results to me in case it does not record your name.
