Dairy Day is on Thursday:
Students will be attending Goochland 4-H Dairy Day. 4-H Dairy Day is scheduled for May 10th with a rain date of May 11th. The Goochland 4-H office has planned an excellent day of “hands on” learning experiences for your students. Students and teachers will have the opportunity to rotate through 10 stations (15 minutes each) that relate to the dairy industry. Many community organizations and businesses have volunteered their time and resources to make this program possible. We believe this will be a quality experience for your students. Please make sure that your students come prepared to be outside all day. I would suggest that they bring their lunch, a bottle of water, and plenty of sunscreen. It looks like it is going to be a very nice day .
SURF’s Up in Second Grade: Silent, Uninterrupted, Reading, for Fun
I would like all students to keep a beach towel and flashlight in their cubbies for the remainder of the school year. At the end of each day we will SURF (spread out our towels, turn off the lights, and pick up a good book).

Economics Project
In order to help the children get a “real-life” understanding of the principles of economics that we have been learning about in class, your child will have a special economics project.
Your child will get the chance to be a producer and a consumer. He or she will make 10 items of a product of their choice. It could be 10 baked goods, 10 origami shapes, 10 rock pets, 10 paper dolls, or 10 of just about anything… as long as your child makes them. They cannot be store bought. These items should cost less than $2 a piece to make (for example if you are making bracelets it should not cost more that $2.00 to make each bracelet; making the total cost of supplies less than $20.00.)
Then your child will bring the items to school on Friday, May 4th. Each child will set a price for his or her item and try to sell it (Must be less than $10). They will need advertisements to help sell his/her product. Next your child will get to be a consumer. I will give the children $10 in paper money to buy their classmates’ products. They get to keep the items they buy in order to make it authentic. As the sale continues, your child may want to raise or lower the price (learning about supply and demand). They will also have to make choices about what they buy in order to stay within their $10 budget (learning about opportunity costs).
Hopefully through this activity, the students will gain a firsthand glimpse at the world of business and economics. Thank you for any encouragement and support you can give your child on this project.
Be a producer:
1. Make 10 items of a product
2. Set a price for each item (Under $10)
3. Make an advertisement (sign or poster that represents the product; it should include name of product and cost per item; this is part of your grade)
Be a consumer:
1. You have a spending budget of $10
2. Make wise choices as you buy your classmates’ products
