Steve Geyer Named Virginia’s Curriculum Leader of the Year

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VA –

Goochland Assistant Superintendent Dr. Stephen Geyer Recognized as Curriculum Leader of the Year by Virginia Association For Supervision and Curriculum Development

Dr. Stephen Geyer, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for the Goochland County Public Schools, was named Virginia’s Curriculum Leader of the Year at the 2013 annual conference of the VASCD in Williamsburg, VA. In what one member of the selection committee indicated was a “decisive” selection, the organization noted Geyer’s oversight of the restructuring of teacher leadership, strategic compensation and Balanced Assessment Project as providing models of effective practice for educators across the Commonwealth.

“The thing that really stands out about Dr. Geyer is his commitment in everything he does to ensure that students find learning engaging,” remarked superintendent Dr. James Lane in his comments to the crowd of 700 educators from across the state. “I have never worked with another administrator so passionate about the growth of every child.”

Geyer led the division’s Balanced Assessment Project, in which standards of minimal achievement and time-consuming benchmark tests are replaced by measurements of student growth and authentic, performance-based assessments that allow students to learn using real-world concepts and exercise higher level skills such as critical analysis, creativity, and problem solving.

Geyer’s wife and two children, both Goochland students, joined him on stage for the presentation of the award. “Any recognition like this is the result of exceptional teamwork and the hard work of many,” Geyer shared with the crowd as he accepted the award.  “I am blessed to serve the community of Goochland and to work with visionary leaders, dedicated professionals, and supportive families.”
