3rd Grade Class News

Week of February 23rd

Thank goodness we are back at school after a full week off for snow days!

This week:

**Science:  We will review and finish learning about energy.  The students must know these key concepts:  The sun is a major source of energy for the earth, sources of renewable energy – sunlight, water, wind and wood), sources of nonrenewable energy – (fossil fuels – coal, oil and natural gas)s and the advantages and disadvantages of using renewable versus nonrenewable energy sources.

**Math:  We are learning about Geometry.  Key concepts include: lines, points, rays, parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines, angles, right angle, vertex, endpoint, polygon, quadrilateral, rhombus, octagon, hexagon, rectangle, pentagon, two-dimensional figure, and congruency.

**Language Arts:  We will continue to work on writing a paragraph using a good, strong Topic sentence, supporting body sentences and a closing sentence to sum up our paragraph.  We will begin to learn about past, present and future tense verbs.  On Thursday, we will test on verbs.

**We will continue to work on reading fluently and using comprehension strategies such as finding the main idea, details, prediction and inference.  We will begin to learn about comparing and contrasting elements of literature.

Multiplication Facts Ice cream party

We are earning our way towards an Ice cream Party!  We will begin with a test on multiplication facts for the 0’s.  Each level earns a piece that will be used in the ice cream party.  For Example:  A 100% on the 0’s earns a spoon, a 100% on the 1’s earns a bowl, a 100%  on the 2’s earns a napkin, and so on, until we reach the 12’s.  I will be keeping track of where everyone is on the chart in the classroom.

 

Weekly Reading Logs:  This week, we will have a new selection to read and fill out each day.  Please return the Reading Folder Daily.

3rd Grade News

You Can Use

 

The PTA is asking for donations for the Annual Silent Auction.  Each grade level is filling a basket for the auction.  More details concerning our basket and the theme are attached to your child’s agenda.

This week:

**Social Studies:  We did not do well on the Explorers Test.  We will review each explorer, the country that sponsored him, the area he explored and track his route on the map.  I am sending home a study guide.  Please use this to help your child study for the test.  We will retest on Thursday.

**Math:  We will review adding and subtracting fractions.  We will begin to learn about fractions with mixed numbers.  (ex:  4 ½, 2 ½ , etc)

Tuesday – We will have a quiz on adding fractions.

Wednesday – We will have a quiz on subtracting fractions.

**Language Arts:  We will continue to work on writing a paragraph using a good, strong Topic sentence, supporting body sentences and a closing sentence to sum up our writing.

We will continue to focus on nouns.  Last week we learned what a noun is, plural nouns, and common nouns.  This week we will discuss proper nouns and possessive nouns.

**We will have a quiz on nouns on Thursday.
