Wikis in the Classroom

Yesterday afternoon, we had a class on Wiki Adventures, and in case you missed it, here’s the handout for the class, on our wiki.

This past week I also had the opportunity to attend our Region 1 Learning Series Event for Twenty-First Century Skills. The speaker was Cathleen Richardson, an Apple Distinguished Educator who hails from Georgia. She was a fast talker and mover, sending her energy into the room. This energy hit us in the form of many ideas and examples of technology use available in education today. She impressed folks with her demonstration of QR Codes and augmented reality apps on the iPhone. And she did slow down long enough to tell us the virtues of wikis. You can find many of her resources she shared online on her own… (you guessed it!) wiki!

And then this morning, I came across this resource, some sage advice on 10 best practices for using wikis in the classroom from Barbara Schroeder.

And here’s the important thing that I shared with our workshop participants last afternoon.

  1. Our concept of a document is grounded in a printed page. These are typically formal.
  2. Word processors make documents, but by in large, these tools are designed to make printed pages.
  3. Writing and printing “documents” are not mutually exclusive.
  4. The original web browser from Tim Berners-Lee was called Web and was designed to be read and write. As it turned out, by the time we all got to it, it was pretty much read only.
  5. The terms “Read/Write Web” and “Web 2.0″ both collectively refer to the malleability of web pages today. The best examples? Blogs, wikis, and collaborative applications (think Google Apps).
  6. Wikis were designed from the beginning (by Ward Cunningham, in case you’re wondering) to be online. There was never any intent to print them. They like living in flux, with the capability of changing whenever we need them to.

Let me know if I can help you learn with your students in the wikiverse.

Wiki Power

A recent article from THE Journal detailed how elementary teachers across the country are using wiki websites to enhance instruction – especially for the benefit of collaboration.

I recently put together a presentation on wikis for a class I’m teaching with JMU.

If you’re interested in using wikis in your classroom this year, we have a best-in-class solution with Google Sites – their own wiki tool (which is free, too!). Just let me know…

My thanks goes out to Karren Streagle who sent me this article!

We have Guide

From this week’s TechTimes newsletter:

Many folks have asked for a Google Docs course. We have a Google Apps cheat-sheet online plus a productivity course in Moodle. For G21s, some folks wanted to know where to go for primary resources. We have a page for that. One teacher asked me about what her kids could do with Comic Life. Another teacher wanted some tips on doing a good blog, and we have a style guide. Finally, some folks asked about what “Research 2.0″ means in the G21 framework.

In fact, teachers can add to our guides and make changes. Click on the EDIT button in the wiki. If you don’t know the edit password, I included it in the e-mail.

Wiki?!

In many discussions with teachers about G21 projects, we came up with ways for students to publish online. For others, it was a method for turning in documents as assignments.

Recently, I worked with a group at the specialty education center and they had to turn in podcast episodes to their teacher. We created a Moodle course for this purpose, and the 5th graders logged-on and uploaded their lyrics and math songs. But for other purposes, you may want a public space where students can communicate.

I’ve set up a public wiki area for use by Goochland educators and students. If you think you’d like to use it, contact me. It uses MediaWiki, the same framework used for the famous Wikipedia.

PBWiki – for Teachers

We spoke to several teachers this year that need a wiki space for their class.

Might I recommend PeanutButter Wiki? Their current promotion for educators won’t last forever, so take advantage now of the premium services being offered for free.
