Secret Life of a Sixth Grader

This is an interesting article written from the perspective of a parent, who discovers her son’s thriving life online through Instagram, a photo sharing service.

When my son was sleeping, I was checking the text messages and followed the Instagram updates — after all, this wasn’t really sneaking if my son maintained a public profile. But what could I say? Should I tell him that I am monitoring his moves? Was my looking at text messages the same as reading a diary? Was I violating my son’s privacy and simply making too much of this?

Here are some tips we’ve compiled for parents and families.

Thanks to Mrs. Bachmann who forwarded me this article!

Thinking about Copyright

Today, issues with copyright and the use of media in all forms boils down to a case of digital citizenship.

A colleague from another school division sent me a link to some resources on digital citizenship and copyright. Among them was this YouTube video, a TED Talk, from a rep from YouTube and how they deal with copyright issues.

What’s surprising is that over 100 years of video is uploaded (each day) and that time to encode video is actually time to compare your video to others already on the site! The video clip ends with some of the positive aspects of sharing content, and as always, I recommend folks look into sharing their own content (that’s you, friends) with a Creative Commons license.

Here are some additional resources of interest:

  • Building Digital Citizens
  • Jason Ohler’s Digital Citizenship Wiki (warning: you can get lost here for days there’s so much good stuff!)
  • Library Tools Smackdown (Lots of good stuff, including a section on Digital Citizenship)
  • Parent’s Guide to Facebook
  • The FairUse Evaluator
  • Copyright Clarity – looks like another wiki to support a book
  • Finding Dulcinea on Plagiarism

If you like one or more of these resources, or those linked within, please share them on your blog with your students and their parents!

Goochland Introduces Citizenship 21 Resource

To accompany our G21 (Goochland 21st Century Skills) framework and initiative, today Goochland County Public Schools announces C21: Citizenship 21. This effort is an online resource for Goochland teachers to have access to digital citizenship materials.

To start, teachers have access to best-in-class websites for students undertaking multimedia projects, PDF-based form worksheets for guiding students to better digital citizenship, and information on the wide-reaching implications of good digital citizenship.

Teachers may access the website via our Google Sites area online.

Good Digital Citizenry

In a recent article from THE Journal (September, 2008), Mike Ribble shared what he considers the nine steps towards building skills in becoming a good digital citizen. These are:

  1. Etiquette
  2. Communication
  3. Literacy
  4. Access
  5. Commerce
  6. Law
  7. Rights and Responsibilities
  8. Health and Wellness
  9. Security

As we put our students in front of computers each week, it would behoove us to consider how we’re not only covering the Standards of Learning, but also how our students are developing skills in digital citizenry.

For more on Mike’s steps, check out this PDF guide from Cable in the Classroom. You can also check out the website Digital Citizenship.net for more information on covering digital citizenship skills in your classroom.

Finally, a little over a year ago, “CoolCat Teacher” Vicki Davis posted online about digital citizenship, and I love how it correlates with our own thinking this year on Research 2.0.
