We are reading Romeo and Juliet in class, and it is always fun when we get to Mercutio’s monologue about Queen Mab. The speech is full of vivid descriptions of this fairy who delivers dreams to people at night. The monologue is definitely open to interpretation, so I asked my students to draw her based on how they see the description in their head. Here are their pictures alongside some of the monologue itself.
“O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you.
She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes In shape no bigger than an agate stone
On the forefinger of an alderman, Drawn with a team of little atomies Over men’s noses as they lie asleep;
Her wagon spokes made of long spinners’ legs, The cover, of the wings of grasshoppers; Her traces, of the smallest spider web;
