English 9 Classes
We have now finished reading all three book in the Giver Trilogy. As discussed in class, there are common themes that Lowry touches on in all three books. You are to choose one of the topics below and write a 5 paragraph essay on it. Remember the final draft of your paper is due on Friday, April 3rd. If you are leaving early for spring break, you must turn it in before you leave.
Topic Choices
1. Common Theme – Sacrifice: In each of the three books, Jonas, Kira, and Matty, have to sacrifice something for the greater good of his or her community. Explain what each character sacrifices and why he or she does it.
2. Common Theme – Friendship: All three protagonists in the trilogy find themselves in a difficult place in life, but they each find a friend to help them deal with those difficulties. Explain what the difficulties are that Jonas, Kira, and Matty go through and who their friends are that help them get through those tough times.
3. Common Theme – Individuality: The author of this trilogy, Lois Lowry, clearly has a lesson to teach her readers about individuality and differences. In each book she writes about a character who is different from everyone else in some way or another. Explain how Jonas, Kira, and Matty are different and how they learn to deal with their differences in each book.
4. Theme from Messenger – Trading: In The Messenger the theme of trading is dealt with in many different ways. Sometimes trading is good and selfless while other times it can be completely selfish and cruel. Give three examples of trading from The Messenger. Make sure you give examples of both good and bad trades.
