Chirp Chirp Chirp

The annual chicken hatching happened in Rm#116!  Out of 20 eggs, however, we only hatched 4.  It was quite an exciting experience and we had much discussion about life cycles and economics.  Can’t wait for next year!

Partners in the Arts – Mrs. Edmonds, Mrs. Vaughan Mr. Camden & 4th Grade

We were honored to be asked to participate in a collegial partnership with Mrs. Edmonds, Mrs. Vaughan, and Mr. David Camden this spring.  RES was awarded a grant that allowed for our students to share in this opportunity.  The project revolved around the book Flotsam, by David Weisner. The grant paid to have David Camden on site to work with the students planning and executing a clay mural for inside the school (plus supplies). The focus of the project was the hands-on experience for the students.   The project took about 6 weeks to complete and tied into our science, math, and language arts curriculum juts perfectly!  Definitely a once in the lifetime opportunity!  Thank you for your support, Mrs. Edmonds and Mrs. Vaughan.  Check out Mrs. Edmonds’ blog here . . .

VS SOL Review

We’ll do this review in class.  Number your paper 1-40 so you can write the correct letter for your answer choice.  Bring your paper to me when you’re done!

Try this one for additional practice.  Number 1-34 and bring it to me when you’re done.

Leave No Trace

Great lesson on being a steward of our environment and additional safety tips for when we’re out hiking.  Love the life skills being addressed in 4th grade!  Be sure to practice those principles . . .

Thanks for our visit, Katelyn and Blake!  Hope to see you next year.

Thoughts from Mr. Gardner:

So much is going on as we wrap up for the end of the school year.  Testing wise - First grade through Fifth have completed their MAPS testing.  Kindergarten through Second is finishing up the PALS screenings.  And Third through Fifth have another two weeks to go on SOL tests.  We appreciate you having your students ready each morning with a full belly and adequate sleep.
Something else I’ve appreciated – your conscientiousness regarding early dismissal.  We’ve had a few days of heavy early pickups and the office becomes a bustling place.  Thanks for sending written notes with your child in the morning. This is critical to having your child’s teacher and the office ready to go.  I know sometimes after school doctors appointments can be tough to get, but it really helps keep a smooth learning environment and a safe dismissal process if you can use the car pickup line at 3:10pm near the gym.
Some upcoming events:
Thursday, May 21st at 6:30pm is our final PTA event.  I’ll be giving a small presentation entitled Cyberchat, where I’ll reflect on our 5th grade iPad program.  Rising fourth and fifth grade families are strongly encouraged to attend in order to set up Apple ID’s to make iPad distribution smoother in the fall.  All Roadrunners are then welcome to hang out and eat some Kona Ice treats.
On May 28th we’ll have an awards assembly for Kindergarten and First grade at 8:30am.  That afternoon at 1:30pm we’ll do the same for Second, Third and Fourth Grade.  I’ll be sending out a weblink soon for a live internet video feed of these events.  A perfect thing to share with family unable to attend.
And another reminder that on the last day of school, May 29th, we dismiss two hours early at 1pm.

3 weeks to go!  We can do this!  Stay on track with me and we’ll be set!

Special opportunities this week:

  • Monday – Leave No Trace is a national organization that teaches citizens how to be good stewards of our environment and keep our outdoors clean and healthy.
  • Tuesday – Math SOL pt. 1
  • Wednesday – Math SOL pt. 2
  • Friday – Young Scientists’ lesson on force, motion, energy (Please send in your $15 if you haven’t done so already.)

Science – We will finish up our unit on electricity this week and allow time for our bioluminescent creatures next week.  You’ll have to look for them during our PTA Ice Cream social on May 21st.

LA – We are still reading, reading, reading!  Check out our AR post from earlier to see how we’ve used this one tool this year to foster reading across the curriculum through a variety of genres.  I think you’ll agree we’ve had unbelievable success.  Rm#116 has 85% of our team scoring 80% or higher on comprehension and vocabulary.  We’ve read aloud many books this year in addition to several hundred books that the students have read independently.  Our current read aloud is Book I of the Island Series: Shipwreck by David Korman.  This book is a favorite among my students.  We get so involved that we actually finish all three books in the series before we leave for summer.  Many students have received feedback from Engineer Girl – please forward it to me.  It’s good information.  :)

Math – Our SOL is split over two days, Tuesday and Wednesday.  We’ll do awesome but persistence and work ethic will be keys for success!  Be sure to check out our MATH REVIEW PAGE for practice items.   Be on the look out for 5th grade math over the next few weeks!

Thank you all for a fabulous Teacher Appreciation Week!  I am so lucky to be able to spend time with these incredible 22 young men and women.  Your support and teamwork have helped make this an awesome year.  They have grown tremendously since August and I know they’re ready to move on to 5th grade.  Keep reading over the summer and work on pushing those math skills!  Don’t stop – we’ve all grown so much!

Reading? √

I’d say we’re reading like crazy!  There’s lots of discussion about AR out there – Rm#116 loves it.  Here’s the proof (to date):

1406 tests taken

31,448,835 words read (that’s MILLION)

32 books read aloud this year

100% of our students are in the 10, 25, and 40 point clubs

87% fiction and 13% nonfiction

4609.9 points earned

We’ve met goal after goal and we’re still rolling!  Pick up a book and read with us!  The door is always open . . .
