Week 17 – December 8

Lang. Arts – This week students will continue reading their fiction books and working on the sequencing strategy.  Students will begin working on a December/Winter/Snowy writing prompt.  Words of the Week – wedge, pulley, inclined, plane, screw, wheel, axle, lever, simple, and machine.

Math – We will continue working on Multiplication and move into understanding Division.

History – Unit test on Ancient Greece, Rome, and Mali on Tuesday.

Science – Students will be working on Simple Machines.

This week we will continue to try and catch up from all of these snow days!

Lang. Arts-   In reading groups students will be reading nonfiction text about the Olympics.  Students will be finishing up a writing prompt this week sharing their opinion on snow day and giving reasons why they like or dislike them.  Words of the Week test will be Wednesday (using last weeks words).  Remember to read a chapter from Stuart Little each night as a family, this counts as your child’s nightly reading!

Math-  We will begin our unit on fractions.  Students will be able to name and write fractions, model fractions, and compare fractions with like and unlike denominators.  Students will also learn how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.

Social Studies-  Unit test on Explorers this Friday.  Students should be able to answer the following questions:

On which continents are England, France, Spain, and the United States located?

Where are the countries of Spain, England, and France located on a world map?

Where are the regions of San Salvador in the Bahamas; St. Augustine, Florida; Quebec, Canada; and Jamestown, Virginia located on a map?

Who were some of the important European explorers?

What were the different motivations of theses early European explorers?

What were the successes of the the early European explorers?

What were the effects of the European explorations on American Indians?
