Hello my name is Christina Thompson and this is my fifth year teaching Third grade.

Week 19 – Jan. 5

Week 19 – Jan. 5

Hope that everyone had a great winter break.  We are slowly getting back into the swing of things.

Lang. Arts  - This week I will be working with students individually to administer the mid-year PALS test.

Math – We will begin our unit on Geometry.  Students will be learning about lines, angles, and rays in addition to plane shapes and solid figures.

Social Studies – Students will review what they learned about Christopher Columbus and then we will learn about three other European explorers.

It is hard to believe we have made it to the halfway mark!  This year is flying by, this week we will be MAP testing for our mid-year goals.

Lang. Arts – We will not have Word Study or Words of the Week this week.  We will be finishing up our fiction legends with a quiz on Thursday or Friday.

Math – Students will continue to work on multiplication and division.  Over the break continue to work on multiplication facts, we will have drills beginning when we return that will lead to an ice cream party!

Science – This week we will wrap up our unit on Simple and Compound machines with a test on Thursday.  Students will be creating a brochure to show the six different kinds of simple machines.

*Heritage Doll project is due on Thursday, if you are finished early you are welcome to bring it in before that day.

*We will be going to Envoy at the Meadows for our caroling trip on Friday, be sure to wear some festive clothing and accessories.

*Friday dismissal will be at 1:10.

Lang. Arts – This week students will continue reading their fiction books and working on the sequencing strategy.  Students will begin working on a December/Winter/Snowy writing prompt.  Words of the Week – wedge, pulley, inclined, plane, screw, wheel, axle, lever, simple, and machine.

Math – We will continue working on Multiplication and move into understanding Division.

History – Unit test on Ancient Greece, Rome, and Mali on Tuesday.

Science – Students will be working on Simple Machines.

Lang Arts – Reading groups will begin new fiction books with a focus strategy of sequencing.  Words of the Week -direct, democracy, community, representative, mosaic, Mali, salt, gold, miners, and desert

Math – This week we will be finishing up our unit on Money with making change.  Practice at home by setting up a pretend store and having your child count back change from a dollar.  Test Friday.

History – Students will be learning about Mali this week, quiz on Thursday.  This will conclude our unit on ancient civilizations we will review and have a test next week.




The yearbook flyers will be going home today.  The flyers are advertising an “Early Bird Special” on the yearbooks for $17 until December 16.  After that date, the price goes up to $20.

Lang. Arts – This week we will be finishing up our non-fiction texts with a focus on comparing and contrasting.  Students are also working on the November writing prompt writing to fictitious judges about why they have the best grandparents.  Words of the Week – Greece, Rome, contribution, ancient, sport, column, hill, farm, trade, and arch.

Math – We will begin our unit on Money this week.  Students will review counting money and will begin working on counting change back.

Social Studies – Students will be learning about the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome.

Grandparents Day – Friday – Classroom Visit 11 to 11:20 and Lunch 11:25 to 12:10

It is hard to believe that we are finished with MP 1 and moving on to MP 2.

Lang. Arts – This week reading groups will begin working on Non-Fiction text using the comprehension skill of compare and contrast to understand the text.

Math – Students will continue to work on telling time to the nearest five minute increments.  Students will also review calendar skills.

Science – This week students will be working on our Soil unit in preparation for our field trip on Friday.  We will have a test next week on this unit.

Partent/Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, no school for students.

Field Trip Friday send in permission slip by Wednesday!
