From Coach. Mr. Smith:
“Our students earning the #1 seed is a real student achievement, but is further testament of our teachers and their commitment to academic excellence. As with any competition, you always hope to put your best team out there to compete. Building on the momentum of reaching regionals last year, Mr. Derrico and I reached out to our core teachers, seeking and encouraging our very best academic students to represent our school. Our students have delivered in every way. “
Scholastic Bowl is a great competitive forum offered through the VHSL. It enables students to excel and pursue their competitive interests off of the traditional playing field of athletic events.
From coach, Mr. Derrico:
“The students positively represented Goochland High School by demonstrating integrity and academic excellence throughout the entire season.”
Our sincere congratulations go out to these students and their coaches!
We congratulate Mr. Allen and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) on their recent success at the forestry competition in Powhatan last week. It has been more than 20 years since GHS FFA has competed in any FFA event! Our neighboring divisions were excited to welcome us back into the field and our students did a tremendous job, coming in 3rd overall!
The students worked to identify 25 different species of trees, 25 different pieces of equipment used in the forestry industry, and calculate both tree value and volume in a given area. The students had 25 minutes to complete each station.
We look forward to future success from this stellar team!

The VHSL Group 2A & 3A State Swimming and Diving Championship was held this past Friday, February 21 at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center. Goochland was well represented this year as Justin Edwards swam his way to two first place finishes! Justin won the 200 yard Individual Medley by 0.58 seconds and the 100 yard Breastroke by 5.04 seconds.
GHS had another swimmer, Mary Wright, qualify to attend the State Championship. Though she was unable to attend we are extremely proud of her accomplishments.
Last year both swimmers set High School Regional swim records. This year, GHS was unable to attend the 2A Regional meet due to the most recent snow storm in Goochland.
“I’ve traveled to the state meet with Justin over the past three years and have seen him work hard to improve his times,” explained GHS swimming coach Elizabeth Kilberg. “I was proud of how fast he swam and how well he competed on Friday evening. Justin has been a true leader for the GHS swim team and we will be sad to see him go as his graduates this spring.”
Justin will attend Virginia Tech in the Fall of 2014 and will be a member of the Swimming & Diving Team.
Congratulations Coach Kilberg and the GHS swimmers!
